Environmental Studies

What is the BS in Environmental Spatial Analysis with an Environmental Studies emphasis?

The B.S. in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis with an emphasis in Environmental Studies at Gainesville State College supports the education and preparation of informed, skilled individuals to participate in the ongoing debates on ecological issues and the resolution of the problems critical to the future of man’s relationship to his environment. The B.S. at Gainesville State College gives the student a broad environmental studies emphasis combined with the Global Information Systems requirement offered by the Division of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology. This degree prepares the student for a broad range of occupations in both public and private sector jobs.

What is environmental studies?

• Environmental Studies is a broad application of several disciplines including anthropology, communications, history, applied philosophy, political science, psychology, religion and sociology to environmental issues that confront society today.

• Environmental Studies deals with the relationship of man to his environment as applied through the disciplines above.

• Environmental Studies show us how mankind has damaged his environment and seeks to offer reasonable solutions to those problems.

• The point of studying the environment from a non-natural science view is to allow us to observe problems in the relationship of man to his environment that the natural sciences do not deal with, i.e. law, politics and public policy, health, historical considerations, and sociological implications.

• Environmental Studies is an examination of many questions that concern society today, such as:

o How are the changing ecosystems in the world effecting human society?
o How are human societies effecting world wide ecosystems?
o How is environmental policy and law made at the national and international levels?
o How are health and the environment related?
o What relationship does the environment have with communities, both urban and rural?

What can I do with a major in Environmental Studies?

• Training in environmental studies gives the student a variety of tools necessary to address environmental problems in both the public and private sectors.

• Environmental studies majors are prepared to enter into advanced degree programs as well as jobs in government, business and non-profit organizations.

• With a BS in Applied Environmental Spatial Analysis with an Environmental Studies emphasis, the student will be trained in both the natural sciences, particularly Global Information Systems (GIS) and the social sciences. These tools will make the individual more attractive in the job-market, more so than having one or the other.
