Requirements
To encourage and accommodate students who want to study engineering, but who for various reasons prefer to attend another college before entering Georgia Tech, the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech offers students the opportunity to transfer to Georgia Tech through the Regents' Engineering Transfer Program (RETP).
Gainesville State College is proud to be a RETP institution. Students in this program enroll at
Gainesville State College and take all of their mathematics, science and many of their engineering courses required in the first two years of an engineering program at Georgia Tech. Upon successful completion of these classes, the student transfers to Georgia Tech to complete the requirements for an engineering degree.
By enrolling in the RETP at Gainesville State College, students may attend college close to home, which can decrease the cost of their education and ease the adjustment to college life. Generally, the classes are small which permits more individualized attention and interaction with professors. At the same time, RETP students enjoy many of the advantages of Tech students: they have equal access to engineering majors at Tech, they can participate in the Co-op program, and they are invited to the Tech campus each spring for campus tours, information sessions, and meetings with advisors in their engineering major. At that meeting, the students who will be transferring to Tech the coming Fall Semester can pre-register for classes.
To be eligible for the RETP, a student must be a resident of Georgia. The admission requirements are:
- A combined SAT score of at least 1090 ( minimum 560 math and 440 verbal) and
- A high school GPA of at least 3.0 or
- Have been admitted to an engineering program at Tech.
Students who do not meet the initial admission criteria may qualify for the RETP after the end of their freshmen year by:
- completing the first chemistry and first calculus-based physics course and Calculus I and II with grades of 3.0(B) or higher and
- Attaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Finally, students who complete the courses included in the first two years of the desired Tech engineering program with a GPA of 2.7 or higher in those courses may also be admitted to RETP at the discretion of the Georgia Tech RETP coordinator.
The engineering majors available to RETP students at Georgia Tech are Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear and Radiological Engineering, Textile and Fiber Engineering. RETP students and other engineering students planning to transfer to Geogia Tech or similar engineering institutions should follow the general tract toward an Associate of Science Degree in Engineering at
Gainesville State College.
