Why is my parents' income required to file the FAFSA?

Answer

According to the Department of Education, you are dependent and must submit your parents' income unless you have met ONE of the following criteria:
  • reached the age of 24
  • enrolled in a graduate program
  • married
  • have children who receive more than half of their support from you
  • have dependents who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you
  • both of your parents are deceased
  • you are (or were until age 18) a ward or dependent of the court
  • currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training
  • a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
