Mattie Moon Scholarship

Purpose

The Mattie Moon scholarship was established by Nathaniel Shelton and Robert Thorpe to provide financial assistance to Gainesville State College students. Established in memory of Ms. Mattie Moon, a prominent African American educator and community leader who dedicated 57 years of her life to educating students at Fair Street School, Butler High School, and Gainesville High School, the scholarship is a need based award.

Amount

Scholarship amount is dependent upon available funds each academic year. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified of the award amount by May 1, 2010.

Guidelines

Applicants for the Mattie Moon Scholarship must:

  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be a Georgia resident
  • have been accepted to GSC prior to the scholarship application deadline 
  • be able to demonstrate financial need by submitting the FAFSA prior to the scholarship application deadline 
  • submi two (2) letters of recommendation
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 10 semester hours
  • be pursuing a degree/career in teaching, social work, ministry, criminal justice or the military

Deadline

Applications for the Mattie Moon Scholarship must be submitted to the Director of the Office of Minority Affairs and Multicultural Programs by April 15, 2010. Applications will be available online beginning February 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of decisions by May 1, 2010.
