Academic Mentoring Program- African American Male Initiative

Purpose

The purpose of the Academic Mentoring Program – AAMI is to present African American males at GSC with opportunities for faculty/staff mentoring, leadership development, and personal/professional development. Through participation in this programs African American males will:

  • Develop relationships with faculty and staff at GSC for the purposes of increasing awareness of academic resources
  • Use writing as a means of reflection and be able to use reflection as a learning tool
  • Communicate with people who are different from themselves
  • Learn skills to assist them in future academic and professional endeavors

Amount/Incentives

Students who are chosen to participate in the program will be given a scholarship in the amount of $1000 ($500/semester). In addition, at the end of the academic year students who successfully complete the program will be presented with a certificate of completion.

Guidelines

Applicants for the Academic Mentoring Program – AAMI scholarship must be:

  • an African American male
  • academically at-risk as demonstrated by their placement in learning support courses at GSC
  • able to articulate their desire to participate in the program through an application process which includes a personal statement
  • an incoming freshman

Student Commitment

Students who would like to participate in the program must be able to complete the following:

  • Attend an orientation and a meet and greet reception
  • Attend three semester meetings with their mentor
  • Submit a journal at the end of each semester
  • Attend a Spring semester meeting with the Director for ODIIR and mentor
  • Participate in a Leadership Development series
  • Participate in the Black Student Association (BSA)

Deadline

Applications for the Academic Mentoring Program - AAMI must be submitted to the Office for Diversity Initiatives and Intercultural Relations by July 23, 2010. Applications will be available online beginning July 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of decisions by the end of the first week of August 2010.
