Not sure which major is right for
you?
Is it difficult to decide
between two possibilities -- or more? Do you seek a career that fits your
interests, aptitudes, values, and personality?
Decisions about which electives to take are
easily made when directed by a goal. Students at Gainesville State
College-Oconee enjoy using the college's career-exploration instruments and
web-based personality assessment to find a career that is a good fit -- and the
academic major that will prepare them for it.
Students are also assisted in finding and exploring
academic programs of transfer institutions.
At times, high-demand majors at some colleges and universities have acceptance
criteria that some students may not meet. The career development counselor can
help students find a similar major which will prepare them for their desired
career. Transfer fairs held on the Oconee campus enable students to have
individual discussions with representatives of colleges and universities about
their programs and opportunities.
Up-to-date, extensive career
information is available at the Career Development Office. Students
can learn if their career of choice is projected to grow in number of positions
over the next decade -- in Georgia and the United States. Other information
includes salary projections for various positions, and how to best prepare for
the career of choice.
The Résumé Doctor is
in at The Career Development Office, assisting students in creating strategic
resumes, writing effective cover letters, polishing interview skills, and being
aware of job skills that are most after by employers today. Current
job listings are posted outside the Career
Development Office and the coordinator informs students of local positions when
they become available.
How to make an appointment:
Students
can send an email to M. "Doc" Hawley
or call 706-310-6243,
or drop by the Administration
Building Room 108 (the
second door on the right if entering by the front door) and sign their initials
next to the day and time of their choice in the sign-up sheet next to the door.
Drop-in visits are welcome. If a student must cancel an appointment, it's good
to inform Doc Hawley by email or phone so another student can visit at that
time.
