The
Mentor Program
Gainesville State College is committed to
ensuring the success of its faculty and staff. This commitment includes
the encouragement of teaching excellence, service to the college, academic
achievement and professional growth. The mentor program addresses all four
areas in varying degrees during a new faculty/staff member's first year.
The relationship which develops
between the new faculty/staff member and the mentor serves as the primary
vehicle for the mentor program. This relationship is critical for a number
of reasons. Beginning a new position can be a hectic experience, and it
often sets the pattern for the long-term success of a faculty/staff member.
In the mentor program, the mentor facilitates the transition of the new
faculty/staff member into the world of Gainesville State College. The ongoing
interaction between the two people is inherently bi-directional, thereby
enriching both members of the team. Although this dialogue encompasses
many issues, it always focuses on student success. For faculty, the
exchange of ideas about teaching techniques fosters the development of
strategies that will ensure excellence in the classroom.
Through this process., both the
individual and the College are enhanced. The mentor program with a senior
faculty/staff member's voluntary involvement and the program's emphasis on
students and the values of the College will hopefully lead to a more committed
faculty/staff member who will continue to enhance the College's effectiveness.
