CIRCA: Conference for Innovation, Research, and the Creative Arts

The GSC Honors Program is organizing the third annual CIRCA: Conference for Innovation, Research, and Creative Arts.  We are inviting submissions from ALL students for papers (oral presentations), posters, and artistic endeavors. We hold this event to provide students the opportunity to present their work to a student, faculty, and staff audience (see date below). CIRCA 2013 will be the third annual interdisciplinary conference to showcase student class work that demonstrates exceptional innovation, research, or creative endeavor. CIRCA 2013 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2013, on the Gainesville Campus and Thursday, April 11, 2013, on the Oconee Campus.

We invite ALL students to submit an application with an abstract and ask that faculty encourage their students to apply to present a paper, a PowerPoint presentation of a class project, a poster about some innovation or research, a (short) musical performance, a painting, or other class work. Participation in CIRCA will be recorded on co-curricular transcripts.

CIRCA was formulated and approved in spring 2010, planned in fall 2010, and first offered in March 2011. Over 100 individuals attended the first CIRCA. They listened to the students’ explanations of their work, asked questions about artistic techniques, discussed the research conclusions, and examined the geospatial data. This conference extends classroom learning and promotes cross-disciplinary dialogue. CIRCA celebrates academic excellence in all areas and provides students with the opportunity to present their work publically.

Application Process:  Click here to download the application form for the 2013 conference this Spring. The application requires no material beyond the application form; therefore, questions should be answered in such a way that the committee has a clear picture of the innovative idea, research, or creative expression. Send your application as an attachment to the appropriate email address, as explained in the application.

  • Posters should be printed and laminated.  (Student Life has poster printers available.)
  • Oral Presentations will be 10 minutes each.
  • Oral Presentation Panels should have three or four students presenting 10 minutes each.
  • Visual Arts should be portable and able to be displayed on its own easel or other stand. We welcome painting, sculpture, digital media (providing your own computer), and other forms of expression.
  • Performances:  We hope to offer several short performances at each campus, but decisions regarding these will be based, in part, on the availability of proper venue.

Review Process: A group of faculty and staff will review the abstracts.  This committee, along with the current and former Honors Program Directors, will read and choose those abstracts to be accepted for presentation. Please remember that the abstract must be well-written, using language understandable to the general public. Discipline-specific jargon should be avoided, or, if necessary, clearly defined.

Those students whose work has been accepted will be contacted via email.  Student presentations will likely be made at the home campus.
