* Satisfactory writing sample evaluated by the English faculty.
** Placement within the ESL track is determined by COMPASS Placement scores, writing sample, and internal ESL test.

(a) Students who must take three or more Learning Support courses are required to take GSCE 1101, Gainesville State College Experience, during their first or second semester of enrollment at Gainesville State College.  Students who place in ESL Reading will also take Academic Vocabulary I & II (ESLV 0051 and ESLV 0052).  Students who place in two or more Learning Support classes in the ESL track will also take ESLO1101, Classroom Communication & College Orientation along with speaking skills and listening comprehension.  Students may also be required to take ESLC0061, Classroom Communication I.

(b) Students who were placed with the CPE will exit with the COMPASS unless CPE testing is permitted as an accommodation through Disability Services.

(c) Students enrolled in both Learning Support and credit courses may not withdraw from Learning Support courses unless they also withdraw from credit courses.  There is an exception.  The student who remains in at least one Learning Support course may also remain in GSCE 1101, a 1000-level PHED, and/or a performance course.  This regulation applies throughout the semester.

(d) If a required Learning Support course is not available, a student may enroll in a course for degree credit if the student has met the course prerequisites, subject to the approval of the Director of Learning Support.

  1. Letter grades used in Learning Support:

Exit Level Grades                     Non-Exit Level Grades
    A, B, C                                    IP, F, U, W, and WF
  2. The Institutional policy on Learning Support transfer:

(a) Students who complete Learning Support Reading, English, or Mathematics at another University System of Georgia (USG) institution are exempted from that/those area(s) at Gainesville State College.  Those students who begin Learning Support courses but do not complete them at another USG institution are placed in the equivalent courses at Gainesville State College.

(b) Terms of enrollment in Learning Support courses at another University System of Georgia institution are counted toward the maximum allowed for completion of Gainesville State College Learning Support courses.  If transfer applicants have more than the maximum number of attempts allowed at Gainesville State College, those applicants will not be accepted.

(c) Any students who have been placed on Learning Support Suspension from another University System of Georgia institution will be admitted to Gainesville State College at the end of the one year suspension in accordance with University System and Admissions policies.  Please refer here for current GSC Admissions Requirements:  http://www.gsc.edu/admissions/requirements/Pages/default.aspx

(d) Any students who are placed on Learning Support Suspension or who leave GSC for three consecutive semesters without having satisfied his/her Learning Support requirements will, upon application for readmission, be required to take the COMPASS Placement Test in any unsatisfied Learning Support area.  All current Admissions criteria will determine eligibility to return to GSC. http://www.gsc.edu/admissions/requirements/Pages/default.aspx  Students who do not have a CPC in the related LS area and who complete the collegiate-level coursework at an accredited institution prior to the completion of the LS Suspension may apply for early readmission.  Students with CPC deficiencies in the related LS area may not apply for early readmission, unless they transfer in 30 hours of transferable credit with the application for readmission.

(e) Students who transfer in fewer than 30 hours of college credit are subject to all the requirements of entering freshmen.  Students who transfer in 30 or more hours of college credit are exempt from CPC requirements, but if they do not transfer in a college course for which a Learning Support course is a prerequisite, they are subject to COMPASS testing and placement if they have not completed the Learning Support requirement at a prior USG institution.

(f) Gainesville State College Learning Support students are not allowed transient permission to take Learning Support courses at other institutions nor does Gainesville State College admit transient students into its Learning Support courses.

(g) Once students remain enrolled after the drop/add period of their first semester in any Learning Support course, submission after the midpoint of that semester of ANY standardized test scores and/or transfer credits satisfying the Learning Support requirement no longer has any bearing on the students’ Learning Support status at GSC.  Any test scores or transfer credits submitted toward satisfying Learning Support requirements must have been completed prior to enrollment at GSC.

      5. The Institutional academic progress policy (probation, suspension, exclusion, etc.) as it relates to Learning Support students [please note:  an attempt in Learning Support is defined as any semester in which the student receives a grade other than W - i.e., IP, A, B, C, F, WF, or U]:

(a) When students are initially placed in MATH 0097 and fail to complete MATH 0097 with a grade of C or better by their second semester of enrollment, they are placed on Learning Support suspension for one year (three consecutive semesters).

(b) Students who pass MATH 0097 at the end of their first attempt will have two semesters to pass MATH 0099.  If they pass MATH 0097 at the end of their second attempt, they will have one semester to pass MATH 0099.

(c) Students placed by COMPASS in ENGL 0099 and/or READ 0099 have two semesters to complete these courses with a grade of C or higher and a passing COMPASS score.  Students who do not pass within the two semesters are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters).

(d) Students in the ESL component of Learning Support have three levels of ESLW and of ESLR and have maximum of three semesters to complete each level.  If they do not complete a level within three semesters, they are suspended for one year (three consecutive semesters).

ESL students who choose to enroll in regular Learning Support Reading and English instead of the ESL equivalents must sign a “Waiver of Right to a Third Semester ESL Attempt” form.  They may not use up their attempts in READ 0099 and/or ENGL 0099 and then switch to ESLW 0075 and/or ESLR 0085 for a third semester.

(e) Students in ENGL 0099, MATH 0097, MATH 0099 and/or READ 0099 may be suspended after fewer than the maximum number of attempts allowed if they fail to make adequate progress.  ESL students may be suspended after fewer than the maximum number of attempts allowed if they fail to make adequate progress in any level.

(f) Students with remaining Learning Support requirements who have been out of school for three or more semesters must reapply to the college and must take the placement test in any area of Learning Support still not satisfied.  If they are again placed in Learning Support courses, all prior attempts will be set back to zero and the students will be allowed to begin anew.  Students who test out of Learning Support on their placement test will have completed their Learning Support requirement.

(g) Students returning from a one year (three consecutive semesters) Learning Support Suspension must take the COMPASS Placement test in any unsatisfied area of Learning Support.  The College will take the highest placement score on record.  Students who place into Learning Support will have their attempts reset to zero.  Academic Resources and COMPASS Practice tests are available on GSC's website:  http://www.gsc.edu/academics/acadenrich/ls/Pages/default.aspx

(h) Students who have remaining Learning Support requirements and are returning to GSC after having been away from GSC for less than a year may not be exempted from their LS requirements unless they are eligible for transfer admissions and have the specific transfer credit listed in 1. (a) 1, 2, or 3.  If they do not, they must complete their Learning Support requirements upon re-enrollment, with previous attempts being counted.

  1. Exit Policy for Learning Support:

(a) In order to exit a Learning Support course, students must meet the criteria specified in item #2.

(b) Students with documented learning disabilities enrolled in Learning Support courses are required to fulfill all stated requirements before exiting.  These students should be provided with appropriate course accommodations.

(c) Students with learning disabilities are required to meet the minimum COMPASS score.

(d) Students with learning disabilities may petition through the institution to the System Committee on Learning Disabilities for a maximum of two additional semesters of Learning Support work.  The documentation submitted by such students must be consistent with the definition and criteria for evaluation provided in Section 2.2.  Documentation must be sent to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at least one semester in advance of the time the accommodation is needed.  The Committee may request additional information in its consideration of the institution's recommendation for additional semesters.

(e) Students in any attempt of ENGL 0099, MATH 0099, READ 0099, ESLW 0075 and ESLR 0085 who have A, B or C averages but who do not pass the COMPASS for exit will be allowed one opportunity to retake the test before the beginning of the next semester on a date that will be set by the Director of Learning Support and the Director of Testing. This is typically two days after the last scheduled COMPASS exit test.  Students who do not score at or above the cutoff established for the area in which they are taking a retest will not be allowed to exit the course.
