Optimize Photos for the Web

  1. Open Photoshop.  On campus, click:

Start --> GSC Menu --> Art, Music & Theatre --> Art --> Adobe Design Premium CS3 --> Adobe Photoshop.

  2. Open the photo.  Click File-->Open, navigate to the picture stored on your computer or on the network, highlight the picture, and click Open.

  3. Crop the picture.  Using the marquee tool (top-left tool on left tool bar) with your mouse, mark the area that needs to be used.  For a circular picture, press Alt on the keyboard and click the marquee tool.  Anything outside the rectangle or circle will be discarded.  Then click Image-->Crop.

  4. Reduce the image size.  Click Image-->Image Size.   set the width OR height of the picture.  Photoshop will automatically reduce the opposite dimension proportionately (if Constrain Proportions is checked).

  5. Optimize the file size.  Click File-->Save for Web & Devices

On the right side of the window, click the drop-down arrow near "Preset."  NOTE:  Any photograph should be saved as a jpg, and any icon or title with large color blocks should be saved as a gif.  When in doubt, click each of the 4 picture windows while choosing a different file type (ie. GIF 128 Dithered for one picture; JPEG High for another).  The best choice will be the best-looking picture with the lowest possible file size (listed under each picture).

Click Save and navigate to the location the file should be saved.
