Getting Started
- Before you begin designing your web page, submit a
request to obtain web space on the GSC web
server. You will receive an email with your
new website address.
- Personal and class web sites are fun to create
because the design possibilities are endless.
There is no template that one must adhere but a
GSC
template is available upon
request.
-
Architecture
-
Make a list of topics to include on
your web page.
-
Your menu should contain 2-6 links, so if
the list of topics contains more than 6 topics, group
them into categories. For instance, office hours,
phone numbers, and email address may be grouped into
"Contact Information."
-
Use Front Page Shared Borders to create
an easily navigable menu that applies to each page.
-
Front Page Tips
- Open your site.
To open Front
Page, click Start-->GSC Menu-->General
Applications-->Microsoft Office XP-->Front Page.
To access your web site, click File-->Open Web;
Type web
address (ie.
http://www.gsc.edu/dept/gscuserid);
Click OK-->Open;
Enter User ID and Password;
Click Open again.
- Single-spaced lines. "Enter"
creates a double-spaced line, but "Shift" + "Enter"
creates a single-spaced line.
- Insert a picture.
Place your cursor where the picture should be and
left-click.
Click Insert-->Picture-->From File.
Navigate to the picture (Desktop, My Pictures, Floppy
Drive).
Click Insert.
- Shared borders. Placing a menu
or a header in Shared Borders means you only need to
make changes once, and the changes will be made on every
page. To add Shared Borders,
Open the page.
Click Format-->Shared Borders.
Make sure Current Page is checked and check box(es) for
Top, Left, Bottom, and/or Right. Click OK.
Repeat these steps for each page that needs a shared
border. Selecting "All Pages" sometimes results in
loss of information--a little Front Page bug.
- Create a hyperlink.
Type text to be linked.
Highlight text.
Click Insert-->Hyperlink.
Navigate to the correct page or type in the complete
address.
Click OK.

Web Design Tips
-
Colors
combinations. Choose a background color that
contrasts nicely with the text and link colors on that
page. Text should stand out and not blend in to the
background.
-
Background colors or pictures. For personal web
pages, backgrounds can be used to express the owner's
personality, but care must be taken when choosing a
background. Try to pick one that is "easy" on the eyes
(not too bright or busy).
-
Copy.
Make sure copy is to-the-point with NO excessive
information. Delete, reword, and delete some more!!!
Also, in order to keep the readers' eyes from traveling
across a full screen, try placing text into shortened
tables or double-columned tables.
-
Fonts. Stick to fonts that are
installed on most computers, such as Arial, Times New
Roman or Comic Sans MS.
-
Jpg's vs.
gif's. Generally, if you're using a photograph,
save it as a jpg. If you're using a title or icon with
fewer, larger blocks of color, save it as a gif.
-
Image
resolution. When creating or editing photos,
make sure the image is set at 72 dpi.
