International Admissions
ESL Information
Gainesville State College offers courses designed to prepare
students whose native language is not American English
for success in college credit courses. Placement in ESL
is determined by a TOEFL score, placement testing, or
professor's recommendation. In addition, students who
score high enough on placement tests to enroll in
college-level courses may also choose to take some ESL
courses in order to enhance their academic performance.
ESL courses carry institutional credit which does
not count towards graduation. The College offers two
levels of classroom communication, three levels of
grammar, and three levels of grammar and rhetoric.
Students have three attempts to exit each level.
Students in Learning Support ESL must take ESL 0061
and ESL 0062 (Classroom Communication I and II). These
courses include a College orientation component.
